What is Abacus?

The abacus is a renowned Visio-Spatial tool that is utilized to form mathematical images in a child mind and helps in the development of a number of sensory pathways responsible for creativity, reading, reasoning, observation, and conceptualization for writing skills, and many other benefits associated with right side brain development. The abacus accelerates right and left brain functions by stimulating the nerves in the fingers that send messages to the brain through the neurons. Abacus mental arithmetic develops Kinesthetic (touch and feel); Visualization (observations/retention and recalling) and Auditory Skills (listening skill and etc.)

Abacus is a Latin word that has its origins in the Greek words abax or abakon (meaning “table” or “tablet”) which in turn, possibly originated from the Semitic word abq, meaning “sand”. The abacus is an instrument, a manual tool invented by the Chinese 2000 years ago. While modern calculators are useful and important educational instruments in the right setting, they also can be a crutch where children miss out on fundamental math manipulation skills. An abacus, however, provides a tool to arrive at the answer quickly, but still allows children to deeply learn the fundamental skills. An abacus is able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. It handles decimal points as well. For serious abacus users, it aids in advanced math.

Using an abacus, a child can do all arithmetic calculations up to 10 digits and master the skill of doing it mentally, without relying on modern devices such as calculators. There are procedures and training methodologies to master abacus use. When children use both hands to move the beads for small and large arithmetic calculations, the quick communication between hands and brain stimulates brain cells, promoting quick, balanced and whole brain development.

Abacus Benefits

  • Increased Self-Confidence
  • Mastering Mental Arithmetic skills in a short time
  • Increased Right Brain Developement
  • Increased Memory, Memory Recall Speed and Accuracy
  • Enhanced Concentration
